FAQ's
Why is this year round and not just during baseball season?
After coaching for the last decade, I have witnessed growth most often in the off season. High school baseball is a short 3 month season and a lot of the time the team is focused on being as competitive as possible and there is only a finite amount of time that I have to work with players in a 2-3 hour span. OTDC will fill the gaps with educational approach to development throughout the year.
I am not interested in playing college baseball, is this still worth it?
OTDC is designed to help high school athletes to achieve their goals, whether that is making the freshman, JV or varsity team. The skills that I teach are universally looked for by coaches at any level and individualized to get every client to wherever they want to be, whether that is the professional level or to be more competitive. If you are not interested in playing in college, the assignments will be adapted to help clients find the right fit academically and socially without the baseball aspect in mind. Knowledge about colleges will enable families to make a better holistic choose when moving on to the next stage in life.
Do you offer private lessons?
NO. OTDC is designed to be a virtual development process with in-person metrics. OTDC is a value added service for private instructors and facilities. OTDC will work with coaches and private instructors to continue the development of the client.
I just want to pay for one piece of the class, is that possible?
NO. This is a holistic process to educate clients on all aspects of baseball development. Even if you are the best player on your team there is room for growth in all areas that OTDC covers.
What happens if I can't make an in-person metric test?
There will be two options. If schedules allow it, OTDC will offer multiple time slots to work around the busy schedules of families.
Second option- The in-person testing is to gather and track data to further progress. If the client feels they are progressing without the data then we can skip a in-person session for that quarter.
Does this mean I have to give up other sports?
Absolutely not and I recommend playing as many sports as possible. Athletic skills from sport to sport are transferable and the most successful professional players often played multiple sports. Not only the skills but the lessons learned in different sports make you are better competitor and teammate. I played soccer, basketball and baseball in high school. I was the backup goalie in soccer and only saw the field in a few games. Basketball I was a 5'10 power forward and learned athletic movements that made me one of the best defenders by my senior year. These lessons made me a better athlete and competitor.
How do I complete the OTDC assignments when I am playing other sports?
OTDC is meant to be individualized and flexible. I work with every client on time management skills and creating routines to balance their in-season sports, training, assignment's and social lives. After seeing thousands of students and athletes over my career, it is the ones who have simple routines and schedules who are able to balance not only the stresses of high school but learn to thrive. OTDC teaches good habits that will translate the rest of their lives.
How do you teach nutrition?
High school athletes make terrible food decisions because of lack of education. I am not a nutritionist but a researcher. I keep it simple and manageable for athletes to understand what they are putting in their bodies on a daily basis and how it affects their performance. I advocate for eating single ingredient foods the majority of the time based on proven research from experts.
Why do you use a third party for strength and conditioning?
Being a former professional athlete does not make me an expert in strength and conditioning. We use a third party to ensure that each OTDC client is meeting their goals with a expert S&C coach who will be with them on demand via an app and tracking their progress through the year with four in person metric testing combines. This is the most convenient way to train for a busy high school athlete.
What are mental skills?
Mental skills are often the missing piece from being a average high school baseball player to being able to compete at the next level. I am not an psychologist, but through decades plus of experience with every type of athlete and student, I have been able to guide athletes through the toughest situations that they will face on the field. This will be done through a combination of my experience, current professional athletes experiences, book studies and historical examples.
What happens if I miss a virtual class?
All classes will be recorded and stored in Google Classroom. It is the clients responsibility to watch it at a later time and take notes on what was covered in the class.
Are there assignments every week?
Yes, even the weeks that we do not have a virtual meet. I believe in the Growth Mindset mentality that should be constantly nurtured.
